Flavor, Texture, Usage
While the York / Mountaineer is a wonderful eating apple, it's one of the few apples to retain the shape of a slice when used in baking. This makes it a "must-have" for serious apple-pie bakers.
Availability
This apple should be available for sale towards the end of October.
History
This unique apple was discovered in York, Pennsylvania, in the 1800's. Yorks / Mountaineers grow best in certain areas of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The shape of a York / Mountaineer makes it unique since it is a large apple, flat on the top with angled sides. Yorks / Mountaineers were popular with Virginia's early settlers because they kept all winter long in cool dirt cellars, just like a fine wine. A month in storage after picking brings out the Yorks' / Mountaineers' unique flavors.
